The Spirit of Satchidananda School and Orphanage.

http://sisproject.org

A small group discovered that they all shared a common dream: to build a school and orphanage where children would be raised in an environment of love, given an education, and guided under the discipline of yoga. This group came together with the vision of bringing forth a generation that would serve others and help make the world a better place. The dream was commonly inspired by His Holiness Sri Swami Satchidananda a man who worked tirelessly to bring unity to mankind. He spent his entire lifetime serving humanity and promoting peace and was bestowed with many awards such as the Juliet Hoister peace Prize together with Queen Noor. His motto, ‘Truth is one, Paths are Many” taught that we should not allow religious beliefs, creed, caste or race to divide us. The project is a tribute to his service and will be named, ‘The Spirit of Satchidananda School and Orphanage.”

The location of the school and orphanage is Debh Ghat, in the South of Nepal. The name Debh Ghat means “the gateway to God” and the area is home to many ashrams and holy sites. Hari Bandari, a local Nepalese who has been responsible for bringing medicine, clinics, sanitary systems and schools to nine villages in Nepal is assisting the Spirit of Satchidananda team in bringing this project together. Since childhood Hari has witnessed many in his community suffer and die unneccisarily through poverty and political turmoil. He vowed to serve his people and his work is proof of his success. He continues to travel around the world spreading his message and gathering support for his people. His humility, honesty and compassion have touched many hearts. Hari has already done the groundwork for this project, yet a lot of work lies ahead.

Initial plans include the construction of a main school building with classrooms, an assembly hall, dining facilities, kitchen gymnasium and offices. The school would cater for poor children and orphans, as well as children from affluent families, charging school fees accordingly. This would allow the school to become self- sufficient, create jobs and encourage integration and unity. Next to the school the team plan to build a housing complex. Construction would begin with three homes to accommodate three sets of foster parents who would take care of eight orphans, in hope that these children are given a sense of security through family life. Longer-term plans include constructing a home for women and babies.

Being familiar with Swami Satchidananda’s work, a number of organizations and patrons have agreed to support the Spirit of Satchidananda team in their endeavors. We currently have support from charitable organizations such as AKIN and the Integral Yoga Centre of Gibraltar. In line with the spirit of service, the project hopes to attract a number of energetic individuals to volunteer their time and talents to teach at the school or assist with the administration Many people are seeking ways to serve the world, and the Spirit of Satchidananda provides such an opportunity – the chance to give back to the world.
